Old meets new: From forgotten 1920s charm to modern luxury

Every space has its legacy, and each home reflects a fusion of history, individuality, and aesthetic sensibility. Our recent project renovating a 1920s penthouse in Chicago (circa 1929), reveals how a dwelling's storied past can be revitalized and married with contemporary glamor to forge a living space full of character and modern sophistication.

EMBRACING HISTORY WITH CONTEMPORARY FLAIR

Historical spaces are an enduring reminder of architectural heritage. Preserving such homes invites future generations to appreciate the craftsmanship of bygone eras. But preserving history doesn’t need to hold back a creative vision for a home or living with modern luxuries.

Located in the heart of Chicago, this penthouse required a significant transformation in order to align with its new inhabitants' vision. They sought to blend classic elegance with contemporary, clean-lined feel and sophistication  of Modernism — envisioning an inviting and vibrant living space.

Our approach artfully combined these elements while restoring and accentuating the penthouse's original historical charm. The apartment's heritage-inspired design seamlessly blended vintage grace with Chicago Modernism. Customized choices such as the crafted island and semi-custom cabinets showcase the beauty of tailored design.

Taking the space from an outdated look, with red floors and cabinets, buried original details and a lack of flair, to a space full of life, character, and luxury was an absolute pleasure.

The fusion of classic design with a modern twist led to the creation of a new exquisite bar in place of an old staircase.

Upgrading the fireplace with a faux marble finish not only gave one of the best features in the room a much-needed face lift but also preserved the granite tile underneath, ensuring it was not damaged. These design choices were not only thrilling to plan and execute but produced a stunning result.

BRINGING PERSONAL TOUCHES TO LIFE

Incorporating our clients' heirloom pieces and original art infused a one of a kind personal touch to the space. These curated additions not only elevated the aesthetic but added a unique individuality to the rooms.

ENHANCING THE VIEW

Careful window treatment was crucial in combating intense heat while preserving the splendid view. While also adding some perfectly placed rust-toned color to the living area, the window treatments also demonstrate the nuance required to balance light and privacy, creating a refreshing and comfortable ambiance.

CREATING A DYNAMIC EXPERIENCE

After expanding the kitchen space, we focused on defining and elevating the dining room with a coffered ceiling. We first raised the ceiling by minimizing the crawl space above which required disposing of thousands of pounds of unnecessary waste and rubbish left over from builders of bygone eras.  The dining room's transformation, with its raised and coffered ceiling, lends an open, refined atmosphere, harmonizing perfectly with the apartment's other spaces.

THE RESULTS OF THE TRANSFORMATION

The final product is a stunning testament to the combination of the old and the new. This 1930s penthouse, now rejuvenated with modern elegance, retains a sense of its historical roots. The top-tier finishes ensure a luxurious feel, preserving original features that continue to whisper from the past.

This transformation eloquently portrays how historical buildings can blossom in the contemporary world, serving as sophisticated homes filled with character and elegance.
